New Year, New Closet!

Here are some of my top tips I tell all my clients about cleansing and organizing their closets:

Tip #1 – EDIT!!!  If you haven’t worn it in a year, then chances are you are never going to wear it.  It’s time to let it go unless it is an investment piece or has sentimental value.  If you are on the fence with something, put it away in a bin and revisit that bin in six months.  If you haven’t fallen back in love with it, it’s time to say goodbye.  This will help ease you into the breakup.  Remember, if you buy something new try to get rid of something old to avoid cluttering your closet.
Tip #2 –  “NO MORE WIRE HANGERS!!!!!” I am with Faye Dunaway on this one!  Try to use the same color hangers with a nonslip material to hold your clothes in place without ruining their shape. Look for a slim shaped hanger to create as much extra space as possible.  I like the Real Simple Slimline Hangers.
Tip #3 – ORGANIZE!! Arrange your clothes by category, i.e. skirts, pants, tops, blazers, etc., and by season.  Avoid mixing your summer sarong in with your wool skirt.  This will make it easier when you go to look for something.  If possible, try to put your favorite pieces in an accessible place to make getting ready a lot smoother.
Tip #4 – SHOES!! I like to organize my shoes with one heel out and one toe out so you can see the style and heel height which makes finding what you’re looking for a lot faster.  If you don’t have the shelf space that warrants this, get stackable plastic bins and lay them in the same way.  What you don’t see you won’t wear so try to keep your shoes as visible as possible and not thrown on the bottom of your closet.
Tip #5 – BAGS!! Consider using hooks for bags with longer straps otherwise arrange clutches and totes by height, color and style.  Same rule applies here for bags and that is, what you don’t see you won’t wear, so try to avoid sticking bags within another bag to create more space.  You may forget you have it and never wear it.  Unless the bag has some ornate detailing that requires it to stay in a duster or box leave it displayed.
